A silence permeated over the cemetery, where hundreds of people gathered to say farewell to fallen 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper Spc. Christopher Harris.
The loss of this American hero reverberated throughout the Fayetteville community, compelling strangers to pay their respects.
Harris, a 25-year-old Army specialist and a 2010 graduate of Grace Christian School in Sanford, was buried with full military honors at the cemetery in Spring Lake. Hundreds of people gathered at Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in Fayetteville and lined up in procession for the graveside service that followed.
Harris, of Jackson Springs in Moore County, died in Afghanistan on Aug. 2 when his patrol vehicle was struck by a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. Sgt. Jonathan Michael Hunter, from Columbus, Indiana, also died in the explosion.
