From the back seat of his armored Toyota Land Cruiser, Lt. Col. Rob Pickel locked his eyes to scan the vast mountains of Pakistan's Lower Dir province.
It was February 2010, and his convoy was traveling toward a girls' school that extremists had threatened to flatten.
Threats were prevalent at the time, but American soldiers who were in Pakistan to train the country's military were more concerned about violence at crowded markets in Peshawar.
"When I was in Pakistan, there was stuff blowing up every day," Pickel said. "We knew there was a threat, but I didn't expect to get hit where we did."
