Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division have begun departing to Iraq to back the U.S. intervention against the Islamic State.
Master Sgt. Patrick Malone, spokesman for the division, said about 500 paratroopers from the division headquarters are scheduled to deploy in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. The deployment is nine months.
The division headquarters will assume the role of Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command-Iraq, replacing 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley, Kansas.
They will provide command and control of coalition troops who are training, advising and assisting Iraqi Security Forces.
