Pencils, glue sticks and wide-ruled notebooks bumbled down an assembly line as dozens of volunteers stuffed backpacks from the gym at Albritton Middle School on Tuesday morning.
The volunteers were focused and moving fast – no time for chit chat.
“Do you need more highlighters?” a man yelled down to a group at the end of a table.
By the end of the day, 1,200 backpacks would be stuffed with all the essential school supplies children need for note-taking, research projects and any class assignment a teacher makes this year. The event, organized by nonprofit Operation Homefront, distributes backpacks to preregistered children of Fort Bragg’s soldiers ranked private to staff sergeant.
